PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who install electric fencing systems in various sectors. Learners will not just be able to install these systems but will also be able to verify the use of components in a specific application. Learners will also be able to use electric fencing testing equipment to ensure proper installation.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan an electric fence installation.
  • Install electric fence components.
  • Install energizer.
  • Test for operation, safety and handover installation.

  • Safety procedures may include but are not limited to tools, first aid, current legislation and awareness of electrical hazards.
  • Installing includes the mounting and configuration of the electric fencing systems.

    Component selection is described to meet current legislation and safety requirements.

    Install electric fence components.

    Fastening methods may include but are not limited to screw on, clip on, nail on and popem.

    Bracket fastening and pole mounting methods are demonstrated in an application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Insulator fastening methods are demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods of fastening insulators to brackets/poles are demonstrated in an application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Method of wire threading is demonstrated to ensure safe and secure installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Joining techniques are demonstrated to ensure safe operation of the fence. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Joining techniques may include but are not limited to line clamps and ferrules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Wire tensioning and terminating methods are demonstrated to ensure safe operation of the fence.

    Tensioning/termination methods may include but are not limited to the use of ferrules, tension springs and compression springs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Earthing techniques are applied to ensure the efficient operation of the fence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of mounting energisers are demonstrated in terms of manufacturer's instruction and current legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Installation of energiser is demonstrated according to the application and surroundings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods of connecting the energizer to power are demonstrated to comply with safety criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Power connection may include but is not limited to HT and LT cable, conduit.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Auxiliary devices are connected to the energizer as per manufacturer's specifications.

    Test for operation, safety and handover installation.

    The fence is tested to ensure that it is working safely and effectively.

    Test equipment may include but is not limited to a fence meter, multimeter, fault-finding meter.

    The energizer is tested to make sure it is compliant with current legislation and national standards.

    Energizer must include SANS Standard and IEC regulation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons and criteria for warning devices are explained to ensure warnings are given as per specifications and current legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The operation of the system is explained to the client in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for handing over the system to the client are described in terms of manufacturer's specifications and current legislation.
