PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who operate in the hunting sector and is required communicate with clients and hunting staff in order to brief individuals effectively in order to ensure safety. The objectives are to brief and convey essential information, also to identify and deal with sources of conflict and provide answers to questions and solutions to problems that may arise. The qualifying learner will be able to communicate effectively with both the client and hunting staff and will be able to:
  • Communicate information and camp logistics to the client.
  • Communicate with all personnel with a view to satisfying client needs and objectives.
  • Identify and evaluate problem situations that could arise during the hunting safari and act promptly to resolve them.
  • Assist the client in completing necessary administrative documentation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further required that the learner has been active as an amateur hunter for a period of two years. It is furthermore assumed that the learner holds the relevant firearms competency and licencing required for the use of firearms.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Brief the client in terms of logistics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client is briefed within the context of safety in the hunting environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The client is offered guidance and assistance, possibly even some basic guidelines in matters related to the shooting of animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is briefed on what to expect at every stage of the guided hunting experience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Communicate with all personnel with a view to satisfying client needs and objectives.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tracking staff is briefed on the trophy quality of a particular animal, and on the requirements of the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A system of hand signals to be used as communication medium in the field is explained to the client and personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Communication is established and maintained with drivers and the carcass recovery team to ensure a smooth conclusion to the hunt. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and evaluate problem situations that could arise during the hunting safari and act promptly to resolve them.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client is briefed on the relevant actions and interventions to follow in the event of a problem situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Incorrect animal has been shot, wounded animal, lost animal.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant interactions to follow in the event that the personal safety of participants in the hunt is endangered, are explained to clients. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Conflict situations, or situations that may lead to conflict, are identified and defused quickly with the skilful use of diplomacy and a reasoned approach.

    Wrong animal has been shot, undersized trophy, wrong expectations, lost quarry.

    Assist the client in completing necessary administrative documentation.

    An outline is presented of the administrative requirements that are to be met at every stage of a guided hunting experience.

    Appropriate assistance is provided to the client in completing necessary administrative documentation.

    Registers, permits, indemnity forms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Assistance is provided to the client in rendering suitable taxidermy instructions.
