PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to demonstrate understanding of LPG and natural gas combustion systems and the equipment used in such systems.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe a LPG or natural gas installation configuration.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different basic gas supply, delivery and control system configurations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different air delivery, ventilation and mixing system configurations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different burner, ignition and flame management system configurations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different flue configurations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The context of this unit standard is based on a typical domestic, commercial or industrial gas installation. It includes one of the following types of installations:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.

    Describe a LPG or natural gas installation configuration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different applications of LPG or natural gas installations are listed based on a wide range of South African installations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The components and layout of a basic LPG/natural gas combustion system are described based on a typical commercial or industrial installation and using accepted industry terminology. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components should include a storage and supply system, regulator, ventilation, mixing system, ignition system, burners, flame management system and flue.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components of typical commercial or industrial LPG/natural gas installations are identified using accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The basic working of a typical commercial or industrial LPG/natural gas installation and the role of each of the individual components in the system are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of different basic gas supply, delivery and control system configurations.

    Different simple gas supply, delivery and control system configurations and their applications are described with the assistance of freehand drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The advantages and disadvantages of different gas supply, delivery and control system configurations are explained based on industry case studies and -experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Indicators and reasons for poor gas delivery and control system performance are described using typical industry examples.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
