PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who administer and interpret polygraph examinations and who need to understand how human behaviour can influence an examination result.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining different ways of interpreting human behaviour.
  • Discussing the relationship between human behaviour and the detection of deception.
  • Explaining patterns of behaviour that influence the outcome of a polygraph examination.
  • Analysing the influence of culture and other aspects of diversity on polygraph examinations.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Issues of diversity that influence polygraph examination include, but are not limited to, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, culture, race, faith and the language used in a polygraph examination to detect deception.
  • Polygraph examination refers to the complete polygraph process.
  • Test refers to the administration of specific questionnaires as part of the polygraph process.

    Explain different ways of interpreting human behaviour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different approaches for explaining human behaviour are analysed with reference to influencing and predicting human behaviour in an examination situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Approaches include, but are not limited to, behaviourist, structuralist, functionalist, gestalt, humanistic, cognitive, cognitive dissonance and personality theories.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate terminology is used to discuss human behaviour in the context of polygraph examinations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Theories that explain why deception causes a reaction in polygraph examinations are discussed with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Discuss the relationship between human behaviour and the detection of deception. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Motivational theory is used to predict an individual's needs and explain potential behaviour. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Theories include, but are not limited to Maslow, Murray, Hertzberg and Mc Clelland.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of memory as a defence mechanism is explained with reference to the detection of deception. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain patterns of behaviour that influence the outcome of a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Disorders that influence the outcome of a polygraph examination are explained with reference to the possible outcomes if a subject displays the characteristics of each disorder. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Disorders include, but are not limited to anxiety, mood, personality, somatoform, dissociate and impulse control disorders.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences for the subject and examiner if a person with a disorder is subjected to a polygraph examination are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The influence of personality and perceptions on polygraph examinations are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The influence of emotions and their affect on physiological responses are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Analyse the influence of culture and other aspects of diversity on polygraph examinations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The cultural differences and values in a specific community are investigated with reference to potential implications for polygraph examinations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of negotiating meaning in an examination situation is explained with reference to common understandings and an individual's frame of reference.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
