PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons responsible for receiving slurry and controlling deposition of the slurry onto a tailings dam, controlling the pool and decanting the supernatant water. A person credited with this unit standard can:
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to the deposition of tailings.
  • Prepare to deposit tailings.
  • Deposit tailings.
  • Complete duties pertaining to the deposition of tailings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The learner will be required to perform tailings deposition by means of one or more of the following methods:
  • Deposit tailings onto an impoundment-type dam.
  • Deposit tailings onto a spigot-type dam.
  • Deposit tailings onto a tailings dam by means of cycloning.

    Hazards and associated risks pertaining to the selected deposition process are identified through relevant risk assessment procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The actions to be taken should hazards and risks be encountered are explained in terms of specified requirements.

    The principal components and the specifications of the deposition system are identified and their functions explained in terms of design and operational requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

  • Tailings dam: The repository where the tailings are deposited for disposal.
  • Penstock: The vertical drainage tower typically located in the basin of the dam.
  • Deposition: The process or act of depositing the tailings typically as a slurry.
  • Slurry: The mixture of tailings and water.
  • Decant: The process of removing free water from the surface of the dam typically either by a penstock, or by pumping.
  • Impoundment: Structures, walls, embankments or a depression that contains the tailings.
