PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the enforcing of acceptable fishing practices. The standard enables the relevant knowledge and skills required to use knowledge and understanding of the commercial, subsistence and recreational fishing methods used in their area of operation to ensure compliance with regulations and to inform and educate the public in the correct and legal methods to utilise. This competence will contribute to a culture of voluntary compliance with conservation and management measures.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the types of commercial, artisanal, subsistence and recreational fishing activities that are practiced in your area of operation.
  • Identify non-extractive activities.
  • Identify probable illegal activities in the area.
  • Report on fishing and related activities in the local area.

    A report is prepared and presented on fishing activities within the area of operation, with emphasis on illegal fishing and harmful practices.

    Feedback is provided to superiors as to the appropriateness and practicality of present policies in the area, taking into account socio-economic and cultural factors.
