PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for loading and unloading people into and from a shaft conveyance.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the specified requirements pertaining to the conveyance of persons in a shaft.
  • Prepare to load and unload persons into and from a conveyance.
  • Load and unload persons into and from a conveyance.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the specified requirements pertaining to the conveying of persons in a shaft. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The restrictions regarding the transporting of persons, mineral, material and explosives and the effects to health, safety and productivity if specified requirements are not adhered to, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The code and special signals used when transporting persons in a shaft and the effects to safety and productivity if specified requirements are not adhered to, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The specified requirements regarding the queuing of persons, permitted number of persons entering the conveyance and the safety precautions to be taken before any signals are given for the entry and exit of persons into and from a conveyance, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of adhering to specified requirements whilst conveying people, are explained.

  • Adherence to shaft schedules.
  • Clutching procedure.
  • Adherence special instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Required personal protective equipment is available, fit for purpose, operational and used in accordance with its design and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The physical condition of the workplace is examined and hazards to health and safety are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conditions must include the following:
  • Slippery conditions.
  • Hearing and vision obstructions and interference.
  • Guards and fences.
  • Loose equipment and material.
  • Shaft safety and arresting devices.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences to health and safety of not complying to specified requirements when preparing to convey persons are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences must include those for the following:
  • Failure to wear or wearing incorrect personal protective equipment.
  • Failure to examine the physical condition of the workplace.
  • Failure to deal with hazardous conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The signals interchanged to position the conveyance, to permit the entrance and exit of persons into and from the conveyance and the precautions taken to prevent the unauthorised use of the lock-bell key are conducted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The securing and releasing of the conveyance, control of shift and precautions taken to prevent unauthorised entry into the conveyance are conducted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with specified requirements, promotes effective teamwork and avoids dysfunctional conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reports are complete, accurate, in the required format and submitted to the designated personnel on time in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences to safety, health and productivity if the entrance and exiting of persons into and from a conveyance are not conducted in accordance with specified requirements are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences must include those for the following:
  • Transmitting incorrect signals.
  • Failure to prevent the unauthorised use of the lock-bell key.
  • Failure to secure and release the conveyance.
  • Failure to prevent unauthorised entry into the conveyance.
  • Failure to promote teamwork and avoiding conflict.
  • Failure to submit accurate reports on time to designated persons.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Note to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
