A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will be able to create, store, execute SQL queries and retrieve results from such queries.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Create and execute a simple SQL query under supervision.
  • Create and execute combinations of simple alphanumeric queries under supervision.
  • Multiple alphanumeric selection queries are created, executed and stored under supervision.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the:
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • ID 116936: Use a Graphical User Interface based database application to work with simple databases.
  • ID 117927: Use a Graphical User Interface-based database application to solve a given problem.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Including SELECT and WHERE statements.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A WHERE SQL clause is used in a query.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    E.g. SELECT * FROM parcels WHERE ownerid = '12345'.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
An SQL wildcard clause is used in a query.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
E.g. SELECT * FROM parcels WHERE ownerid LIKE '12%'.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Create and execute combinations of simple alphanumeric queries under supervision.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    AND, OR, NOT, XOR.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A SQL query that includes fields from two tables is created under supervision.

    E.g. SELECT a.ownerid, b.ownername FROM parcels a, person b WHERE a.ownerid = b.id.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Multiple alphanumeric selection queries are created, executed and stored under supervision.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
