PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This Unit Standard is intended persons who are tasked with the inspection of the finished looms and harnesses as well as the designing thereof. Learners will demonstrate knowledge of the acceptability of the looms and harnesses to successfully inspect and measure the quality of the finished product.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and analyse the IPC/WHMA-A-620standards.
  • Preparing the inspect standards ion workstation.
  • Conducting inspection of the assembly according to IPC/WHMA-A-620.
  • Interpreting product documentation.
  • Designing cable and harness system according to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards and customer specifications.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Standards may include but are not limited to:
  • Set standards refer to the J-STD: 001, IPC-7711 and IPC-A-610.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of and analyse the IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Different parts of cable and harnesses are identified and explained in the context of IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Looms and harnesses are analysed in order to determine conformity to the set standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Defects detected are documented for corrective action.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare the inspection workstation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Calibration of the microscope is checked in order to determine tolerance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Equipment to measure the pull strength is checked in order to verify its tolerance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Work area luminance is checked to ensure visibility.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Luminance refers to be at least 1000lm/mē.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Conduct inspection according to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Inspection includes but is not limited to soldered terminations, crimp terminations, insulation displacement connection, splicing, ultrasonic welding, connectorisation, moulding/ potting, markings and labelling, shielding, coaxial and twinaxial cable assemblies and securing of the harnesses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Test instruments to inspect the quality and functionality of the looms are explained in terms of their applicability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Different ways of verifying the quality of the looms are applied in accordance with the IPC standards.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Interpret product documentation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The functionality and dimensions of the loom is determined using the engineering drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Defects/acceptability of the finished assembly are recorded for future reference.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Design cable and harness system according to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards and customer specifications.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Inspection includes but is not limited to soldered terminations, crimp terminations, insulation displacement connection, splicing, ultrasonic welding, moulding/ potting, markings and labelling, shielding, coaxial and twin axial cable assemblies and securing of the harnesses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Specifications for the manufacturing of cable and wire harnesses are designed using the set standards and customer requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Design rule check is performed to ensure the functionality and performance of the design.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
