PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to maintain and repair medium voltage switchgear.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the requirements pertaining to maintaining and repairing medium voltage switchgear.
  • Prepare to maintain and repair the switchgear.
  • Maintain and repair the switchgear.
  • Test the switchgear and perform reporting and housekeeping duties.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding required to maintain and repair medium voltage switchgear in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Electrical switchgear operating at voltages between a 1000 volts and 44000 volts.

    Maintenance includes but is not limited to:
  • External and internal cleaning.
  • Inspection and rectification of external defects.
  • Identification and rectification of defects, for example, loose terminations, which will only be apparent by de-energising the equipment and opening up enclosures, or using, where necessary, tools or test equipment (or both).

    Repairing includes:
  • Rectifying defects found during the maintenance.
  • Fault finding and repairing of the electrical system.
  • Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Explain the requirements of a maintaining and repairing medium voltage switchgear.

    The purpose of inspecting medium voltage switchgear is explained with reference to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The application of the different types of cleaning material, equipment and solvents are explained with reference to health, safety and the impact on equipment and environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The various cleaning methods are explained with reference to washing, dusting, vacuuming and scouring. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The identification of switchgear is explained with reference to single line diagrams, the location and marking of the switchgear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The principle of operation of the medium voltage switchgear is explained with reference to specified requirements.

    Tools, material and equipment are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements.

    Permission is obtained in accordance with specified requirements.

    Affected parties are notified of power disruption in accordance with specified requirements.

    The switchgear to be inspected is verified in accordance with specified requirements.

    The workplace is examined for hazardous and sub-standard conditions. Critical hazards and sub-standard conditions encountered in a particular context are addressed in a manner consistent with documented best practice.

    The consequences of not preparing for inspection in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    The power is switched off and lockout procedures are adhered to in accordance with specified requirements.

    Maintenance is carried out according to manufacture's specifications and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Proper and safe fault finding procedures are followed in terms of work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Defects are addressed in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Tools, material and equipment are used in accordance with specified requirements.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
