PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction, Mining, Chemical and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will understand and be able to:
  • Design, construct and commission three phase electrical circuits.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Install an electrical cable.
  • Interpret and construct single phase circuits.
  • Select, use and care for electrical instruments.
  • Design and install electrical wireways.
  • Select, install, connect and commission single phase AC machines.
  • Read and interpret basic engineering drawings and sketches.
  • Select use and care for portable power tools. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons wiring and commissioning three phase electrical circuits independently.

    Commissioning test include but is not limited to:
  • Continuity test.
  • Alarm continuity tests.
  • Insulation resistance test.
  • Polarity test.
  • Voltage test.

    Safety and good housekeeping practices are adhered to before and after performance.

    Three phase electrical circuits include but are not limited to:
  • Sequence circuits.
  • Motor control circuits.
  • Load balancing.
  • Metering.
  • Current Transformer and Voltage Transformer.

    Cables and conductors are terminated, numbered and connected according to electrical drawings and statutory requirements.

    All components are fitted, assembled and labelled according to electrical drawings and statutory requirements.

    Commission three phase electrical circuits.

    Applicable test instruments are selected and evaluated for functionality and safety prior to conducing tests.

    Commissioning tests are carried out safely and according to statutory requirements.

    Continuity test, installation resistance, polarity, voltage, phase rotation and earth leakage tests.

    Test results are accurately recorded on commissioning report and reliably communicated according to worksite procedures.

    Commissioning of circuits is done according to worksite procedures.
