PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Selecting, installing, connecting, commissioning A.C. machines and control gear.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Statutory requirements.
  • Use of relevant testing and measuring equipment and hand tools.
  • Unit standard for AC machines at NQF Level 2 and 3.

    Job instruction is evaluated and a sequence of operation is determined.

    Applicable electrical drawings are correctly analysed and selected to meet job requirements.

    Equipment and personal protective equipment is selected, and evaluated for functionality and safety prior to commencement.

    Safety procedures related to job requirements and work site procedures are obtained.

    AC machines and their associated control gear are identified and selected according to job instructions.

    Permission is obtained to carry out task according to instructions and drawings.

    Installation area is prepared for the placing/mounting and securing of the machines and control gear as per job instructions, drawings and diagrams.

    Appropriate tools are selected and used correctly as per manufacturers specifications and work site standards.

    A.C. machines and control gear are installed according to instructions, drawings, diagrams, manufacturers specifications and statutory requirements.

    The consequences of not using the tools are explained according to statutory requirements.

    Commissioning is carried out and operational tests conducted to determine if AC machine and control gear is functioning according to desired requirements.

    The ability of gathering information is demonstrated by making use of logical methods according to fault finding techniques where applicable.
