PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. Fire on board a ship is one of the ever present and most feared threats to any crew. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will achieve the knowledge and practical competencies required to fight fires on a vessel. The competencies captured in this Unit Standard are not only have to physically fight the fire itself but the directing of fire fighting efforts as well.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Operate fire fighting and related damage control equipment.
  • Extinguish and control fires.
  • Assess and report damage.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Operate fire fighting and related damage control equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fire fighting and related damage control equipment is located and identified on systems drawings and on the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fire fighting and related damage control equipment is operated and applied according to their purpose, operating principles and areas of functioning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of capabilities and limitations of the automated fire fighting systems and equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Automated systems may include but are not limited to the HYFEX systems, the magazine sprinkler systems, the ANSUL system, the Gas Turbine, the propulsion diesel and diesel generator carbon dioxide extinguishing systems, the Firemain System and engine room ventilation fire flaps.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The carbon dioxide percussion system is initiated and all relevant mechanical and electrical equipment is isolated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Portable extinguishers and salvage systems are operated in accordance with their purpose, design and as per standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Portables extinguishers include but are not limited to automated fire-fighting, powder and Carbon Dioxide extinguishers, fire hoses and nozzles.
  • Salvage systems include but are not limited to eductors, fixed salvage pumps and portable electric plus diesel salvage pumps.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Instances requiring the jettison of petrol tanks is identified and if necessary initiated in terms of the associated safety precautions and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Breathing equipment is utilised during the fighting of fires according to its limitations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Limitations includes air pressure and capacity (time on air).
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedures to be followed for requesting additional external assistance to fight fire are applied according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific fire fighting procedures are applied in terms of each compartments layout, hazards and equipment in the compartment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards include hazards to be removed or neutralised and blow down air bottles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is directed and operated to control and extinguish fires in accordance with operating instructions, organisational drills and the nature and characteristics of the type of fire. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of fire include Class A, Class B and Class C fires and engine room fires.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All types of fires are responded to in terms of own duties and responsibilities in detection, communication and direction of fire fighting activities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Duties include the application of first aid, the isolation of compartments, raising the alarm, conducting kill card actions, the activation of fire fighting systems, plans for re-entry and the obtaining of power from best available remaining source (diesel generator fires).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Remote and automated fire fighting systems are operated in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Fire fighting teams are briefed in terms of their duties and responsibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Fire-fighting activities are directed in a safe manner so as to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and minimise damage to the ship and injury to personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Commands are given in a clear, concise and correct manner maritime terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The safety of the vessel and personnel is controlled during the fire fighting activities via available systems and by means of constant monitoring and feedback.

    Information in terms of the fire is collected from fire fighters and supervisory personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The fire is assessed in terms of causes and consequences of the fire in terms of damage to the ship, equipment and personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reports on damage are completed and submitted to the appropriate authority within agreed time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information relating to fire fighting is disseminated via approved channels to assist with refinement of equipment, responses and procedures.
