PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has as its core purpose, qualifying learners who will demonstrate an understanding of the historical, political, social and economic realities of South Africa. They will demonstrate a clear understanding of South African domestic policies and government functions.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the structure of the South African government.
  • Explain the history of the achievement of democracy in South Africa.
  • Describe the government policy on social and economic issues.
  • Describe the cultural diversity of South Africa.
  • Explain South Africa's role in SADC countries and Africa.

    An explanation is provided regarding the historical context of diversity and the role it played to separate people and provide a rationale for apartheid.

    Racial, gender and religious stereotypes are explained in terms of the impact on society and government response to such stereotyping.

    Explanations are provided of the policies and issues of the SADC countries, highlighting South Africa's role.
