PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to use energy based health and wellness practices as self-help tools. This unit standard is designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for the maintenance and protection of good health in all fields of our complex society.

According to numerous experts, a large number of people are affected by high levels of stress, which may be due to numerous factors such as natural disasters, accidents, poverty, un-employment, domestic abuse.

The context of this Unit Standard refers to philosophical aspects, practices and procedures involving the promotion of living in wellness, the furthering of personal growth and taking personal responsibility for ones well being.

This unit Standard would be useful for any person involved in training health care workers, home carers, auxiliary health care workers, community workers, child-care minders, people who generally find themselves in a stressful environment and need to take care of other people's needs or complaints, such as police, defence and correctional services personnel, workers in the hospitality industry, teachers, call centre operators and customer care personnel.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of stress factors and their effect on body and mind.
  • Explaining the need for self-care.
  • Explaining the concept of living in wellness.
  • Demonstrating the techniques to calm, relax and energise the body and mind.

    Demonstrate an understanding of stress factors and their effect on body and mind.

    The concept of stress as used in various fields is explained and the common causal factors identified with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The concept of stress as used in various fields include but are not limited to language, mechanical, music, medical, psychological.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The general effects of stress are discussed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stress includes but is not limited to good stress (eustress) and detrimental stress (distress).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stress response is explained in terms of its effect on the immune system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons why continual, detrimental stress is damaging to a person's health is discussed with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Common everyday stress factors are listed and explained in relation to their impact on one's life.

    Lists should include at least two factors each from the following groups, Sociological, Cultural and Personal factors.

    The effects of detrimental stress factors are explained as they relate to a person's life.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The salient points of a number of energy-based body-mind practices are discussed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Energy-based body-mind practices include but are not limited to integrating body-mind practices, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, breath-work, visualization, acupressure and finger-holds.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The differences between the "external" and "internal" arts are explained in relation to active and passive methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Some of the models that are used to explain "energy work" are explained in relation to their applications and effects.

    Models include but are not limited to Meridians, Chakras.

    Demonstrate calming, relaxing and energising movements.

    Different aspects and benefits of the energy practices are explained and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Movements to manage the body to reduce stress levels are explained and demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stress alleviation tools to reduce stress levels include but are not limited to increasing the flexibility and movement range of joints, opening up airways, i.e. increasing the lung capacity, relaxing muscles, strengthening muscles, improving posture, improving balance, increasing self-awareness, developing emotional well-being and a positive attitude to life, strengthening the immune system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods for preventing injury and gaining the most benefits from the practices are discussed with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Breath-work protocols are demonstrated and explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breath-work protocols include but are not limited observing the breath, abdominal breathing, reverse breathing, alternate nostril breathing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A body scan, meditation and acupressure points are demonstrated to show how tension can be released.

    The emotional freedom technique is explained and demonstrated.
