PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard will enable learners to operate a radio and establish communication with second and third parties. Learners will be able to apply speech procedures to communicate in a clear and concise manner over a radio transceiver.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Describe the uses and types of radio transceivers.
  • Demonstrate the use of the specific radio transceiver.
  • Explain the purpose of radio speech procedures.
  • Describe the measures to promote accuracy when communicating over a radio transceiver.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Communication at NQF Level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Wherever the term "speech procedures" is used throughout this unit standard it should be interpreted as the procedures which are commonly used when communicating verbally via a radio transceiver.
  • Range of modes of operation include, but are not limited to: Frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, simplex, speech and duplex.
  • Range of features include, but are not limited to: Rebroadcast, relay, pre-selected channels and saveable channels.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Describe the uses and types of radio transceivers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The roles of the radio are described in terms of their operating principles.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Roles include, but are not limited to:
  • Man pack, handheld, vehicle installation.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Types of radio transceivers are identified in terms of their uses and limitations.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Types of radios include, but are not limited to Very High Frequency (VHF), High Frequency (HF), Mobile, Walky-talky.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The frequency or channel range of the radio transceiver is identified for optimum use within a structured scenario.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Demonstrate the use of a radio transceiver.
    OUTCOME RANGE
A radio transceiver used in a high security environment can be used to assess this specific outcome. Learners must be assessed using at least one radio transceiver.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The control features of the radio are used in a structured scenario.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Control features include but are not limited to switching on, setting of volume and tuning in to a specific frequency.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A mode of operation is selected in a structured scenario.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The radio handset is used in a structured scenario.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A power supply of a radio is tested in a structured scenario.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain the purpose of radio speech procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The need for use of speech procedures is explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Rules of transmission are explained in terms of organisational processes and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Consequences of deviating from prescribed procedures are explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Rules to ensure security when communicating over a radio are listed with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The use of code words when communicating over a radio is described in terms of its effect on the security of the communication.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Describe the measures to promote accuracy when communicating over a radio transceiver.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Voice techniques used for radio transmission are described in terms of their impact on the communication.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Range of voice techniques include, but are not limited to:
  • Pronunciation, emphasis, tone, clarity.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tools used to clarify a voice message are described in terms of their impact on the communication.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Range of accuracy tools include, but are not limited to:
  • Phonetic alphabet, numerals, date, time.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Radio discipline when communicating over a radio is described in terms of its impact on the security aspect of the communication.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
