PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to use setting tools to decorate and add value to the jewellery item.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify tools and equipment to hold jewellery securely for setting.
  • Identify, describe and use the flexible shaft with correct twist drills and burs for the setting of gemstones into jewellery.
  • Identify, describe and prepare the scorpers for specific setting tasks.
  • Make and use punches and pushers for the setting of gemstones.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are identified, described and selected in terms of their design purposes and functions in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, material and equipment are prepared according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, material and equipment are used according to manufacturer's specifications and jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify, describe and use the flexible shaft with correct twist drills and burs for the setting of gemstones into jewellery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various drill bits and setting burrs are identified and described in terms of their functions and uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct drill bits and setting burrs are selected and attached to the flexible shaft to prepare for the setting of gemstones into prongs, claws and beads in line with jewellery manufacturing standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct drill bits and setting burrs are selected and attached to the flexible shaft to prepare for the setting of gemstones into gypsy or swiss/flush setting in terms of jewellery manufacturing standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of choosing the wrong tools, materials and equipment, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify, describe and prepare the scorpers for specific setting tasks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Scorpers are identified and described in terms of their design purposes and functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Scorpers are prepared for setting gemstones in pave` setting, according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Scorpers are prepared for setting stones into channels, boxes, tubes and bezels, according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Scorpers are prepared for setting gemstones in Swiss/flush setting, according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of using the wrong tools, materials and equipment are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Make and use punches and pushers for the setting of gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, materials and equipment for making setting punches and pushers are selected and prepared according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, materials and equipment for making setting punches are used to form and shape the setting punches for setting gemstones into tubes, channels and box settings in line with setting quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, materials and equipment for making setting pushers are used to form and shape the setting pushers for setting gemstones into prongs, claws and pave` setting, in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The setting punches and pushers are ensured to be in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Setting punches and pushers are used to set gemstones in tubes, channels, box settings, prongs, claws and pave` settings in terms of the industry requirements.
