Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • Complete a case docket.
  • Register a case with South African Police Services (SAPS).
  • Follow up registration of their cases. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Knowledge of Animal Protection Act and Performing Animals Protection Act.
  • Communications at NQF Level 3.
  • Fundamental research and investigation skills. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons enforcing animal protection legislation.

    Write a statement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The statement is completed according to the prescribed format. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Terminology and language used is clear and understandable according to normal industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The statement contains all elements of the crime that is being reported including dates, times and places of occurrence according to legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The rules for taking an oath or making an affirmation are explained in terms of the accuracy of information and the potential impact of false or distorted information. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Complete a docket. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All relevant docket information is completed according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All relevant documents are filed in sequence in the docket according to organizational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documents include but are not limited to witness statements, expert opinion, costs, contraventions, visual evidence and a copy of the legislation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Copies are made of the docket and its entire contents in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Register a case with SAPS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The completed docket is registered at the SAPS charge office and a case number obtained in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The name and contact details of the investigating officer of the case are obtained in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Additional evidence is collected and submitted to the investigating officer in accordance with accepted police practices. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Pursue a case. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Communication with the investigating office is maintained according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Contact with the public prosecutor is established in accordance with organisational requirements and within acceptable timeframes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ongoing contact with the public prosecutor is maintained until the case is completed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Communication with the public prosecutor includes but is not limited to requests for denial of ownership, recovery of costs, court orders to prevent suffering, objections to admissions of guilt and recommendations for sentencing.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.
  • Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
