PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the use of map and compass skills to plan and/or navigate a route in tracked or easy untracked environments. Individuals found competent against this unit standard will be able to handle navigation in a way conducive to the provision of a safe, quality, positive, experience to clients.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Use navigational equipment correctly in a natural environment.
  • Plan a route in a tracked or easy untracked area using a map and/or a compass.
  • Navigate tracked or easy untracked areas safely.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Use navigational equipment correctly in a natural environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of maps and scales are identified and assessed and an appropriate map chosen to ensure that the relevant factors are considered in the planning of a route. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Symbols and information on the map are interpreted to eliminate possible errors and inaccuracies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Essential features of a compass are clearly understood to ensure accurate reading. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Compass readings are performed to determine accurate grid and magnetic bearings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A map is correctly orientated to surroundings with and without the use of a compass. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Magnetic variation of the map is correctly adjusted on the compass to ensure accurate navigation.

    Factors that affect accuracy are identified and incorporated into planning the designated course.

    Plan a route in a tracked or easy untracked area using a map and/or a compass.

    Emergency or contingency escape routes are identified to accommodate potential emergency situations.

    Hazardous terrain is identified from the information on a map and avoided in the planning of a route to ensure participant safety.

    Navigate tracked or easy untracked areas safely.

    A route/course is selected and a map correctly orientated to its surroundings with and without the use of a compass to estimate distance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A designated course is accurately manoeuvred through using the application of navigational aids. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Local weather conditions are monitored and adequate preparations are made in terms of clothing and shelter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Potentially dangerous animals and plants are identified and carefully avoided to ensure safety of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Unknown features in the field are identified using map and compass. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Navigation techniques for limited visibility situations are used to ensure safe passage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Emergencies and injuries are attended to according to requirements in a timely fashion.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
