PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge to describe the location and purpose of fixed and temporary trackside indicators in the rail environment. They will be able to identify and react to various trackside indicators applicable to specific environments to contribute to safe movement on rail.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing trackside indicators.
  • Reacting to all trackside indicators.

    Indicators include but are not limited to speed restriction boards, warning boards, distance boards, catch point indications, warning symbols.

    Trackside indicators are described in terms of appearance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The positioning of all trackside indicators is described according to the relevant organizational standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose of the trackside indicators is explained in terms of their expected outcomes.

    The consequences of incorrect reaction to trackside indicators are explained in terms of railway safety.
