PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to explain the mechanics and workings of the starting stalls as well as the safety precautions required while schooling a race horse to jump from the starting stalls. Learners will also be able to get both unmounted and mounted race horses to go into and exit the starting stalls in an effective manner so as to pass it trackable.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of starting stalls.
  • Introducing an unmounted race horse to the starting stalls.
  • Loading a mounted race horse in the starting stalls.
  • Teaching the race horse to jump from the starting stalls.

    The working mechanisms of a starting stall are identified by pointing them out on a bank starting stalls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The gate mechanism on a bank of starting stalls is explained according to its function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safety aspects are explained for working in and around a bank of starting stalls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process and purpose of passing horse traceable through a bank of starting stalls is explained according to NHA rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The correlation between feed and work programmes is explained in relation to schooling a race horse at the starting stalls.

    Introduce an unmounted race horse to the starting stalls.

    An unmounted race horse is led into and through the starting stall pens with the front and back gates open. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An unmounted race horse is lead into the starting stall pen and with the front gates closed.

    An unmounted race horse is held in the starting stall pen with the front and back gates closed.

    Load a mounted race horse in the starting stalls.
