PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology field.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Establish conditions for fault finding and repairing Process Control Loops.
  • Diagnose faults in Process Control Loops.
  • Repair Process Control Loops.
  • Establish normal operating conditions after completion of repairs.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and development within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • National Certificate: Measurement, Control and Instrumentation, NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range of this unit standard includes faultfinding, diagnosis and the repair of integrated process control loops, relating to temperature, flow, pressure, level and final control elements with associated equipment.

    Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.

    Requirements include but are not limited to statutory requirements, National Standards and manufacturers specifications.

    Establish conditions for fault finding and repairing Process Control Loops.

    Relevant safety equipment is obtained in accordance with workplace procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Diagnose faults in Process Control Loops.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate test equipment is selected for the given faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Test equipment is connected and set up according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The test is performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and all faults are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Test values are recorded and compared against values on application data sheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Process Control Loops are decommissioned in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Functional tests are performed according to manufacturer's instructions.

    Faulty components are identified and repaired or replaced in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Equipment is re-assembled and calibrated according to manufacturer's instructions.

    Equipment is confirmed to be in accordance with operating parameters.

    Process Control Loops are commissioned in accordance with workplace procedures.

    The work area is restored and tidied, and equipment is stored according to workplace procedures.

    Relevant documentation is completed in accordance with organisation requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Test equipment is disconnected and stored according to workplace procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
