PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is designed for learners doing the Further Education and Training Certificate: Measurement, Control and Instrumentation and serves as an elective unit standard for the specialisation in analyser mechanician.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Establish conditions for fault finding and repairing Analytical Equipment.
  • Diagnose faults in Analytical Equipment.
  • Find faults on Analytical Equipment.
  • Repair Analytical Equipment.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and development within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • National Certificate: Measurement, Control and Instrumentation, NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    For the purposes of this Unit Standard:

    Analysers are categorized per method of detection and could include but are not limited to the following:
  • Catalytic Combustion, Electrochemical, Oxygen in gas, Dissolved oxygen, Titration, Infrared or Ultra Violet spectrum, Moisture measurement, Density, Thermal method, Turbidity, Chromatographic, Photometric, telemetry and colorimeter.
  • A minimum of 6 categorised methods of detection should be dealt with for this unit standard to be met.
  • Routine maintenance could require the removal of the equipment or parts thereof, isolation, calibration, installation and operationalisation.
  • Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.
  • Statutory requirements include, but are not limited to applicable standards and National Industry and Labour Legislation.

    Appropriate test equipment is selected for the given faults.

    Test equipment is connected and set up according to manufacturer instructions.

    The test is performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and all faults are identifed.

    Test values are recorded and compared against values on application data sheets.

    Analytical Equipment is decommissioned in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Equipment is confirmed to be in accordance with operating parameters.
