PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to provide a hair braiding and dreadlock service, both on-scalp and using extensions.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Perform dreadlock techniques on natural hair.
  • Perform dreadlocks extension techniques on natural or chemically relaxed hair.
  • Perform on-scalp braiding techniques.
  • Perform braiding techniques using a braiding hairpiece. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Dreadlock or braiding procedures include the whole head.
  • Dreadlock products include but are not limited to shampoo, moulding cream, moulding gel, hydrating spray, oil moisturiser, finishing spray, or similar professional product.
  • Braiding products include but are not limited to shampoo, hydrating spray, scalp treatments and finishing spray.
  • Dreadlock extensions include a minimum of three designs including extensions.
  • Braiding hair pieces include a minimum of three designs including extensions, straight, wavy and any other synthetic natural human hair.
  • Weaving products include but are not limited to cotton, wool or any other suitable sheering material.

    Dreadlock techniques are explained in terms of how they work and their advantages and disadvantages for the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selection of particular products for the dreadlock service is explained according to manufacturer's instructions and industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hair is twisted in a clockwise/anti-clockwise direction with fingers/comb according to service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Moulding cream or gel is applied to twisted hair in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and client requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform dreadlocks extension techniques on natural or chemically relaxed hair.

    Methods of applying artificial dreadlocks are explained according to industry standards.

    Hair is sectioned and plaited in preparation for dreadlock extensions according to service requirements.

    Artificial dreadlocks are woven/twisted into sectioned/plaited hair according to industry standards and client requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform on-scalp braiding techniques.

    On-scalp braiding includes but is not limited to cornrow.

    Products for the on-scalp braiding service are selected that are appropriate for the situation according to manufacturer's instructions and industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hair is sectioned in preparation for braiding techniques according to service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair is braided according to industry standards and client requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Braiding techniques include but are not limited to:
  • Correct tension.
  • Uniform sections.
  • Equal tension throughout style.

    Braiding hair piece is applied to hair and fused with hair according to client requirements and manufacturer's instructions.
