PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform a comprehensive massage service appropriate to the environment of the hairdressing salon.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain massage services.
  • Perform scalp massage services.
  • Perform massage services to neck, shoulders and arms. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Shampoo, condition and treat scalp and hair at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Massage techniques include but are not limited to:
  • Effleurage.
  • Petrissage.
  • Tapotement.
  • Kneading.
  • Friction.
  • Pressure points.

    Advanced massage services include but are not limited to:
  • Scalp.

    Indications and contraindications relating to massage treatment are explained within the salon environment.

    Physiological and psychological benefits of massage and massage techniques are explained within the salon environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Forms of massage are explained that are appropriate for the salon environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Massage techniques and products are described in terms of their purpose, advantages and disadvantages for the salon environment.

    Perform scalp massage services.

    Selection of appropriate scalp massage techniques and products is explained according to client requirements and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Scalp massage is performed using recognised procedures and techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Massage techniques include the application method of massage products.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct posture is maintained during the massage according to operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Scalp massage is finished off according to massage product manufacturer's instructions.
