PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge of regulatory requirements related to construction plant operations. They will be able to apply safe handling and maintenance practices in compliance with plant manufacturer's operating instructions. Learners who prove competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of construction plant operators who are able to competently use science and technology when applying operation techniques.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Appling relevant prescripts of the Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Identifying local hazards on an earthworks site.
  • Explaining control measures for hazardous materials.

    It is recommended that learners entering into a study of this unit standard will prove competence in the following to enable the achievement of this unit standard:

    Hazards are identified in relation to underground risks during earthmoving operations.

  • Telephone cables, gas lines, power lines, sewage pipes, water pipes and storm water drains.

    Hazards are identified in relation to above ground risks during earthmoving operations.

    Range of above ground hazards includes, but is not limited to:
  • Overhead power lines, overhead obstructions, structures/buildings, telephone cables and fire hydrants.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways of dealing with underground and above ground hazards are explained in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

  • The information sources available to maintain and improve awareness of the need for good housekeeping and health (e.g. AIDS Awareness) in the work place in line with statutory health and safety requirements.
  • Safety signs and symbols (national and, where applicable, international).
  • Safety, health and environmental awareness.
  • Potential safety, health and environmental hazards resulting from poor practices in housekeeping, hygiene and safety.
  • The complete range of assigned safety, health and environmental housekeeping duties for which the individual is accountable.
  • Hygiene issues in the workplace.
