PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to develop, implement and monitor a Health and Safety site plan, identify specific hazards related to the construction environment and supervise the implementation of steps to limit damage to persons and property. These competencies complement the other core supervisory competencies and contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of Health and Safety on a construction site.
  • Explaining hazards in construction work areas and preventative measures.
  • Coordinating first aid resources in the case of an emergency.
  • Developing and implementing a Health and Safety Site plan.
  • Monitoring the implementation of the Health and Safety plan, systems and procedures.

    The handling, transportation, storage and utilization of materials are explained according to material properties and organizational procedures.

    The implications of working at elevated levels are explained in relation to safety requirements.

    The implications of working in traffic are explained in relation to safety requirements.

    Recognition of emergencies is explained in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Injuries involving individuals are reported in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The location of first aid material and trained first aid staff is identified according to organizational policies and procedures.

    Visitors and all staff are inducted in terms of the Health and Safety plan.

    Health and Safety statutory requirements are implemented in terms of notifications and appointments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Health and Safety plan is monitored and updated to incorporate changes in terms of policies, procedures and systems.

    Training programs are implemented to train staff in terms of regulations and organizational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information about health and safety procedures, processes and systems to monitor the safety plan.
