PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals who are required to conduct an Adventure Based Learning experience to groups and/or individuals as a means of developing opportunities for the transfer of learning according to identified needs and objectives. The standard aims to train persons capable of conducting rigorous experiences that will enhance the participants' physical, social, emotional and intellectual capacities in a physically and emotionally safe environment, and will benefit the programme facilitators, participants and the sub-field as a whole.

On achievement of this unit standard learners will be able to:
  • Prepare for the facilitation of an Adventure Based Learning Programme.
  • Facilitate an Adventure Based Learning Programme.
  • Conclude Adventure Based Facilitation according to organisational requirements.

    Prepare for the facilitation of an Adventure Based Learning Programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The learning objectives for a programme are analysed in terms of their application to individuals and/or a group participating in an Adventure Based Learning Programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suitability of activities identified for the programme are evaluated against the identified programme aims and objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Programme risk is evaluated so as to prepare for technical and environmental intervention requirements to ensure the safety of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A programme plan is compiled to meet learning objectives and selected activities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A programme plan includes but is not limited to:
  • Objectives, sequenced activities, activity risk and safety requirements and parameters, selection and logistical arrangement for equipment, tools and course requirements, number of facilitators required, time-frames, feedback, technical skills transfer for participation of individuals and or groups, maintenance requirements for the course and equipment as resultant from inspections conducted.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Resource requirements are identified for inclusion in the programme plan that minimise negative environmental impact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Evaluation and feedback methods are determined that will provide the most suitable feedback approach for planned activities and objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Inspections are executed to ensure that course preparation and maintenance meets programme plan requirements.

  • Following of correct organisational procedures, activity risk and safety requirements, ensuring that course requirements and infrastructure meet programme plan requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Adventure Based models of facilitation are used to develop individual and team skills through scheduled activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual and/or group progress and participation is analysed so as to adjust interventions according to identified outcomes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential situations of physical and emotional discomfort or danger to participants are identified and appropriate interventions planned to ensure the dignity and self-respect of participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for situations includes but is not limited to:
  • Equipment and tools, stress, heatstroke, hypothermia, fire, levels of fear and mental stress, embarrassment and dealing with failure.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Feedback is formulated and provided in a manner that supports facilitation and the transfer of learning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Individual experiences are reviewed and re-appraised in support of the facilitation process.

    Conclude Adventure Based Facilitation according to organisational requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Own performance is evaluated in terms of the expected outcomes of the Adventure Based Learning programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use and application of feedback and facilitation techniques are evaluated in terms of the planned outcomes and objectives of the adventure programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Facilitation sessions and recommendations in terms of future programme planning or modifications are recorded in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Programme administration is completed to ensure currency and accuracy of information and progress tracking. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard, or assessing this unit standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
