PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to control green chip production facilities in green timber processing area of a Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Set up green chip production facilities.
  • Set-up and operate green chip production equipment according to company's standards.
  • Produce wood chips of prescribed quality. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical and Communication skills at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Understanding the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area at NQF Level 2.

  • All prescribed routine set up, operation, maintenance and lubrication procedures and schedules, tools and equipment used in green chip production facilities of the Wet Mill.
  • All the prescribed dimensions and quality chip specifications.
  • All prescribed product measuring and recording procedures, tools, equipment and standards.

    The context of this Unit Standard related to training of a Learner in setting up and operating the green chip production facilities in the Wet Mill.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and the ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of the learner's own output under general supervision, and possibly that of others. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect all the prescribed setting up tools and equipment and cutting tools for the chipping green lumber.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Chip production tools and equipment are assembled according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre-checks are conducted on equipment to ensure good working condition according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Findings are reported and dealt with according to company's procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up the green lumber chipping equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Green lumber include but not limited to board, flitch, slab, off cuts, trim ends, edge strips.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Green lumber chipping equipment is safely set up in accordance with industry standards.

    The required cutting tools are safely installed according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machinery is operated according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Control the operation of the chipping equipment in the prescribed manner.

    Activities in the chip production section are explained according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Roles are assigned according to company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Performance is monitored to ensure quality products according to worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Carry out basic routine maintenance and lubrication of chip production and ancillary handling equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Routine maintenance and lubrication schedule is drawn and agreed upon according to worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chip production and ancillary handling equipment are inspected according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maintenance is performed according to schedule and in accordance with company's procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Chip production and ancillary handling equipment are lubricated according to company's procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
