PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The unit standard will be useful for people who wish to complete a NQF Level 3 Learnership in Lumber Milling.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Control of the log handling, sorting and storage facilities of the Wet Mill area.
  • Handle, sort and store logs in prescribed log classes. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 2.
  • An understanding of the detail of the lumber milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Skills competencies equivalent to NQF Levels 2 of Wet Milling as required by the NQF Levels 1 and 2 Learnerships.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
    > The environment, which can be described as the Wet Mill of a Lumber Mill and specifically the log yard of the Wet Mill.
    > All personnel involved in the activities in the Wet Mill.
    > All material handled and processed in this log yard of the Wet Mill.
    > All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the log yard.
    > All the prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication procedures and schedules, tools and materials used in the log yard.
    > All prescribed log measuring, recording, handling and storage standards and procedures.
  • The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the activities of log handling, measuring, recording, sorting and storage in the Wet Mill.
  • The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
    > For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and the ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
    > For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
    > For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity of the Learner`s own output under general supervision, and possibly that of others.
  • The nature of the tasks performed, the scope of learning involved and the required responsibility levels, are consistent with those generally defined for NQF Level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Control log yard throughput and quality to maintain prescribed product standards.

    Log yard throughput is in accordance with production targets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Quality control measures are applied to ensure quality products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Activities within the log yard are regulated by production levels.

    Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of log yard handling and recording equipment.

    Maintenance schedule is drawn up for all equipment used in the log yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Log yard equipment is maintained and lubricated per the drawn schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Recording procedures are applied during maintenance periods. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for the assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator(s) accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).

    The Learner will have acquired the detailed knowledge and understanding of and skills relating to:
  • The measurement and recording of logs received, handled, sorted and stored in the log yard to prescribed standards.
  • The setting up and adjustment and operation of the system to receive, measure, record, sort store and move logs to prescribed standards, in the log yard.
  • The routine maintenance of the system and it`s component parts to prescribed standards.
  • The routine maintenance and lubrication of the debarking facility.
  • The measurement and recording of logs processed by the debarking facility.
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 3.
  • Competence in work procedures, safety and health measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3.
