PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People credited with this unit are able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of wind on roof engineering design.
Competent persons against this unit standard understand:
  • Explain the effect of wind on the roof of a structure.
  • Explain the effect of Terrain Category and Class of Buildings on wind force.
  • Calculate external and internal pressures on buildings with different shapes and heights.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the effect of wind on the roof of a structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Wind is defined in terms of its strength, speed and direction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Standard pressure on a roof structure is calculated according to engineering principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Additional loading of pressure from wind force is calculated according to engineering principles for different heights of buildings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The need for incorporating additional design strength for wind pressure on a roof is described in terms of relevant safety criteria and durability. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the effect of Terrain Category and Class of Buildings on wind force. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of terrain is described in terms of the effect it has in determining the force of wind. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes breaking wind force and increasing wind force.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The class of building is described in terms of the effect it has in determining the force of wind. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes shape, direction and height of building.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    External factors that impact on the force of wind are identified and described in terms of their contribution in channelling or dissipating wind force. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes additional structures and/or natural features.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Calculate external and internal pressures on buildings with different shapes and heights. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concepts of external and internal pressure on buildings of different shapes and sizes are explained in accordance with general engineering practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Internal and external pressures to roofs of buildings are calculated in accordance with engineering principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Height differences are incorporated into calculations and used to justify building design concepts. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    To register as an assessor, an applicant needs:
  • Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant (Portfolio of Evidence).
  • A recognised assessor qualification.

    In particular, assessors should assess that the learner demonstrates an ability to consider a range of options by:
  • Measuring the quality of the observed practical performance as well as the theory and underpinning knowledge.
  • Using methods that are varied to allow the learner to display thinking and decision making in the demonstration of practical performance.
  • Maintaining a balance between practical performance and theoretical assessment methods to ensure each is measured in accordance with the level of the qualification.
  • Taking into account that the relationship between practical and theoretical is not fixed but varies according to the type and level of qualification.
