A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Conduct the correct cultural practices to grow interior plants.
  • Utilise the relevant tools and equipment to maintain the plants in a nursery.
  • Carry out hardening off procedures.
  • Indicate the draw-backs associated with the use of un-acclimatised plants.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply health and safety practices when acclimatising interior plants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The personal protective clothing and equipment that should be used while acclimatising interior plants is identified and described in terms of the protection that the items provide. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The specific items of personal protective clothing and equipment that must be worn when using hazardous chemicals are described in terms of the protection that they afford the worker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The handling practices that must be adhered to when using hazardous chemicals are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The practices for the safe handling of toxic plant material are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The practices for the safe use of pruning equipment to ensure no injuries are sustained are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The moving/transporting of plants/containers using safe lifting techniques are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The importance of identifying any hazards in the workplace is explained in terms of company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the biological processes that occur during a plants acclimatization to an indoor environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The necessity of acclimatizing plants to an interior environment is explained in respect of the cultural practices that are conducted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of moving a plant into an interior environment are explained in terms of the growth processes that occur. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability of certain plants to adjust to lower light conditions is described in terms of the unique biological processes that compensate for these conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The enlargement of the palisade layer is explained in terms of the plant's response to low light conditions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide the necessary cultural practices and conditions to harden-off and acclimatize a plant to an indoor environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons why plants are produced in low light growing conditions are explained in terms of the objective of sustaining growth in an indoor environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The facilities for the production of indoor plants are described in terms of their ability to allow plants to have a sustainable growth in an office environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The care that has to be provided for the plants is explained in respect of the specialist production procedures that are required for indoor plants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The indications of the presence of pestilent insects are described in terms of the signs that are found on or around the interior plants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons for the final conditioning/hardening off of plants are explained in terms of improving their hardiness and adaptability to an indoor environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hardening-off practices are described in terms of the roles that these actions perform in the preparation of the plants for the indoor conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The final treatment that plants receive in the holding facility are described in terms of the objectives of achieving optimal plant appearance and health. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the negative aspects of using unacclimatised plants in an interior environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects that are exhibited by a mature plant when it is suddenly subjected to low light conditions are described in terms of the various set-backs that the plant experiences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of a sudden alteration of the watering regimen and environmental conditions are explained in respect of the changes in the plant's health and vigour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The results of trying to sustain an un-acclimatised plant in an office environment are described in terms of the various problems that are encountered. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact that the installation of un-acclimatised plants has in an office environment is explained in respect of the frequency of display replacements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effects of high plant replacement costs are explained in respect of the negative impact that this has on the company's success and profitability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The duty of an interior plantscaper to warn a client of the possible problems that may arise when un-acclimatised plants are used is explained in terms of the high mortality rates and shortened life span.
