A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Utilise safety practices when developing the cut rose frame.
  • Select, use and maintain the tools and equipment to develop the cut rose frame.
  • Recognise the water shoots and their importance to the cut rose frame.
  • Identify the lateral shoots and their function in the cut rose frame.
  • Develop the cut rose frame to maximize the production of cut flowers from a plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The personal protective clothing and equipment that should be used while developing a cut rose frame is identified and described in terms of the protection that the items provide. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The potential hazards of using secateurs are described in terms of the injuries that may occur while developing the cut rose frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safe use of secateurs to develop cut rose frames is demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The possible consequences of ignoring safety precautions are described in terms of the injuries that can result when working with roses.

    The benefits of utilising good housekeeping practices are explained in terms of the role that these procedures play in minimizing the occurrence of safety incidents.

    The role that good plant hygiene plays in minimising the transfer of diseases is explained and the practices demonstrated to disinfect the rose maintenance equipment, as per company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The necessity of maintaining sharp secateurs for the cut rose frame development is explained in terms of the quality of cut that is effected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of using blunt secateurs during the development of cut rose frames are described in relation to the injuries that may be effected to the stems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct method of sharpening secateurs with a honing tool is demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons for the regular cleaning and lubrication of secateurs are explained in terms of the effect that dirt and rust may have on their efficient operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The correct practices for the cleaning and lubrication of secateurs are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The correct storage of secateurs and other equipment that is used in the development of the cut rose frame is demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The prime objectives of developing a cut rose frame are explained in terms of the objectives to ensure that the maximum production of cut roses is maintained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The determining factors that effect the yield of quality cut roses are explained in terms of the influences that these aspects of the frame have on production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The identification of water shoots is demonstrated and the distinctive characteristics that they display are pointed out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of water shoots is explained in terms of their contribution to the development of the cut rose frame.

    Under developed shoots are identified and the reasons why these must be removed are explained in terms of their inability to produce good yields of cut roses.

    The necessity of developing water shoots is explained in terms of the role that water shoots play in ensuring the optimum production of cut roses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methods of developing water shoots are described in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible consequences of neglecting to develop water shoots are explained in relation to the lower growth and yield potential of the old wood.

    The reasons for conducting selective cutting are explained in terms of the objectives of promoting healthy and virile rose bushes.

    The practices for selective cutting and thinning of unwanted stems and twigs are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The function of sap flow in a rose bush is explained in terms on the effect that it has on shoot formation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various methods of developing the first, second, third and fourth laterals are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The influence of lateral development is explained in terms of the effect that it has on the production and quality of roses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of correctly identifying the laterals is explained in respect of the positive role that they play in the development of the cut rose frame. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct positioning of a cutting point is identified and the procedures for cutting the stem are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The influence that eyes have on the positioning of cutting points is explained in terms of the direction of growth and the development of the frame. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance of developing the overall framework is described in terms of the benefits that this has on the production of laterals.

    The under cutting of laterals are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.
