PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals envisaging operating as an entry-level race official (referee) for triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, other multi-discipline or off-road versions of the sport. Technical practices as it relates to this unit standard aims to generate interest and to encourage new entrance in order to address broad based triathlon competency in the community.

The qualifying learner will be able to explain the basic components of swimming, cycling and running, showing understanding of the principles of the sporting codes making up triathlon. Learners will be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required for the TSA NQF Level 1 category of refereeing triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be competent in:
  • Describing the origins and evolution of triathlon as a sport in national and international contexts.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a triathlon referee.
  • Interpreting and applying the basic rules governing the sport of triathlon.
  • Demonstrating the ability to officiate in all the different areas of competitions.
  • Compiling a competition report.

    On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further, more complex processes related to the coaching of triathlon. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    It is assumed that learners attempting this unit standard are familiar with the basics of swimming, cycling and running as it applies to triathlon. In addition individuals accessing this standard are assumed to have a current first aid certificate so as to enable the handling of injuries.

    Describe the origins and evolution of triathlon as a sport.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A basic overview of the history of triathlon is provided to show understanding of its evolution. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic history of triathlon includes but is not limited to, the evolvement of the sport and its application from a competitive and recreational context.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sport of triathlon is explained in terms of the principles of triathlon and the sporting codes involved in the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of the sport is explained in terms of benefits to the individual and the community. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret and apply rules governing the sport of triathlon.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview is provided of the rules of triathlon as it applies to the main elements of the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Elements refer to but are not limited to swimming, running, cycling and transition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The official signals and control requirements are explained as they relate to the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role and duties of a technical official are explained as they apply to the maintaining of the rules governing the sport of triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of safety are explained as they apply to the sport of triathlon and the laws governing the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles of safety include but are not limited to correct clothing, use of equipment, laws of the road as it applies to running and cycling, aquatic safety, importance of correct instruction of techniques and safety precautions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knowledge of the Code of Conduct is demonstrated using a case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Officiate at competitions in the different areas. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Different areas refer to run, cycle, swim, transition, start, dismount/mount to finish. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rules and techniques relevant to officiating triathlon and multi-sport competitions are demonstrated at club, provincial sanctioned and provincial hosted competitions in different profiles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different profiles include but are not limited to run, cycle, swimming, transition, start, finish, mount and dismount.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principles applicable to triathlon and multi-sport are explained in accordance with the Code of Conduct. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Compile a report on the designated areas of competition.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A report is compiled highlighting challenges and/or opportunities in the designated area of competition in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A record of technical officiating sessions is produced in accordance with organisational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • The knowledge, skill and understanding which should be embedded in the process to enable the learner to become competent in all of the Specific Outcomes.
