PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge about lifesaving to plan, implement and evaluate a practice session. They will be able to apply coaching techniques to develop lifesaving skills to beginners.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and extent of the sport of lifesaving.
  • Creating a safe environment for lifesaving.
  • Implementing a lifesaving practice session for beginners.
  • Evaluating the coaching intervention.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Understand the nature and extent of the sport of lifesaving. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The historical development of the game is explained in relation to the South African context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Organisational structures responsible for lifesaving are described in the South African context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of organisational structures include, but are not limited to; Club, provincial, national and international.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles and responsibilities of the club, provincial and national lifesaving structures are explained according to their constitutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The rules of lifesaving is explained in accordance with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Types of competitions are explained in terms of their rules. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of competitions include, but are not limited to round robin, knock out and league.

    Create a safe environment for lifesaving. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Facilities and environment are checked for hazards before practice sessions and during the competition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is evaluated in terms of its suitability for protection and safety for the players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety of juniors is evaluated in terms of fluid intake and protection from the elements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for elements include, but are not limited to; Heat, sun, cold, water and weather conditions.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Implement a lifesaving practice session for beginners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rules of lifesaving are explained and applied according to LSA rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A lifesaving practice session for beginners is planned in terms of players' characteristics and sporting needs according to Lifesaving SA age specific skills development plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for characteristics include, but are not limited to; Psychological, physical and sociological.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic lifesaving skills and techniques are taught through observation and demonstration using available resources according to the planned practice session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Planned training is adapted in relation to the developmental stages of beginners being coached. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range training adaptations include, but are not limited to; Technical, tactical and social.

    Evaluate the coaching intervention.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A logbook on practice sessions and modified games is compiled to critically reflect on the effectiveness of coaching.

    Feedback is provided to players in terms of skills and performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practice session plans are revised in relation to the own observations and feedback. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
