PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to list and explain different types of emergencies that could occur at sea and describe the resources, equipment and methods that would be followed when abandoning a ship. They are also able to explain how to survive at sea, construct a liferaft, launch and board a survival craft and recover a survival craft. The person will also be able to management survivors and the craft until safety is obtained.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Performing activities related to the launching and boarding of a survival craft.
  • Explaining how to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
  • Describing the construction of survival craft.
  • Handling survival craft.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • In compliance with current Maritime Legislation, Proficiency in Survival Craft Code and Practices, the scope of this unit standard covers the competence to perform survival and emergency procedures as required of all seagoing staff on board, e.g. merchant marine, port operations or fishing craft.

    Perform activities related to the launching and boarding of a survival craft.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various types of survival craft are listed and their purpose and use explained with an example of each type. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of survival craft may include but are not limited to survival craft, rescue boat, freefall survival craft and rescue craft.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre launching and boarding procedures and standards are described in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Survival craft launching activities are conducted in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Survival craft launching may include but is not limited to being able to use; Single arm davits, Marine slide raft escape systems, Manual launching, Hydrostatic release.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Survival craft boarding activities are performed in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Survival craft boarding activities may include but is not limited to being able to donning a life jacket, knowledge of donning and using an immersion suit, safety jump from a height into the water (+/- 3 metre), use of boarding ladders, right an inverted liferaft, perform basic "paddling"/swimming techniques while wearing a lifejacket, perform basic floating techniques without a lifejacket, board a survival craft from ship and from the water while wearing a lifejacket, avoiding danger to others when boarding the survival craft.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The actions required after leaving the ship are described with practical examples of their implementation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Actions required after leaving the ship may include but is not limited to being able to clear away from ship by use of paddles, marshall liferafts, recover persons in the water, plug leaks.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explaining how to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information required to prepare for an emergency is described with examples of what the information means. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information required to prepare for emergency may include but is not limited to location of life-buoys and their accessories, training and drills held onboard, the statutory requirements and the practical aims and drills, the correct clothing to wear for drills and emergency situations, extra articles of clothing to take in case of abandoning ship.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Actions to take when called to boat stations are explained with examples of their impact on survival. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Actions may include but are not limited to personal preparations, extra equipment and provisions to take if time is available.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential dangers in a survival craft are listed and described with examples to personnel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dangers for personnel in survival craft could include but are not limited to: shock, hypothermia, wounds incurred before or during abandoning ship, dehydration, starvation, psychological aspects, understands the possibility of shark attack.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Methods to conserve body heat and energy are explained with examples of when in the water.

    Describe the construction of survival craft.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of survival craft are identified by pointing them out on a vessel or chart. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics and facilities of the survival craft are explained with reference to the manufacturer specifications using maritime terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The construction materials used are described in terms of the construction of the survival craft. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The vulnerability to damage is explained in terms of materials used in its construction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The function of the various liferaft fittings is explained with reference to the manufacturer specifications using maritime terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Various survival craft are recovered in accordance with recovery standards and procedures.

    Handle survival craft. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The engine is operated in accordance with manufacturers specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operation of engine includes but is not limited to manual decompression lever type, ratchet decompression lever, electric start, stored energy hydraulic, stored energy spring, inertia starters, throttle and gears, a controllable pitch propeller.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fault finding is conducted in the event of engine not starting according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The craft is controlled in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and safety procedures in different weather conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Controlling the craft to include but is not limited to handling synchronous rolling, swamping, uncontrolled surfing, broaching and pooping.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Beaching the craft safely is described with maritime sector specific examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Beaching survival craft must include but is not limited to the assessment of the beach, surf conditions, waiting for daylight, importance of pre-briefing of crew.
