PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to identify the types of technology involved and prepare the technology for use. They will also be able to operate, interpret the technology while conducting fishing activities and perform fault finding activities and shut down the equipment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying the types of fishing technology/equipment involved.
  • Preparing the fishing technology/equipment for use.
  • Operating and interpreting the technology while conducting fishing operations.
  • Performing routine maintenance activities.
  • Performing routine fault finding activities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

  • Technology/Equipment fishing is that equipment that is used to monitor fish and fishing locations.
  • The type of fishing method(s) and/or species of fish associated with this unit standard will be determined by the type of fishing involved.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the types of fishing technology/equipment involved. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The technology/equipment may include but is not limited to that monitoring the fishing gear in the water, the movement of the fish and scanning the fishing grounds.

    The various pieces of fishing technology are identified by pointing them out.

    The function(s) of the various pieces of fishing technology are explained in terms of their uses and application.

    The type of information that can be obtained from each piece of equipment is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the fishing technology/equipment for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The technology and/or equipment is checked for readiness according to the manufacturer's operation and safety specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The initial start up settings and adjustments for each piece of equipment are explained and verified according to the manufacturer's operation and safety specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Technology and/or equipment which is unserviceable is reported to authorised individuals in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate and interpret the technology while conducting fishing operations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Manufacturer's operation specifications for each piece of equipment. The different types of fishing conditions experienced which should include but not are limited to factors such as different weather conditions, amounts and species of fish, new and/or different fishing grounds, types of fishing gear, vessel performance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preparing for the fishing activity is done in accordance with set criteria by using the technology and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The procedure for operating each piece of equipment is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The fishing activity technology is operated and interpreted in accordance according to the manufacturer's operation and safety specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Each piece of equipment is shut down in accordance according to the manufacturer's operation and safety specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform routine maintenance activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type(s) of routine maintenance that should be carried out on the various pieces of equipment is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The type(s) of routine maintenance that can be done on the various pieces of equipment is carried out in accordance according to the manufacturer's operation and safety specifications and safe working practices. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform routine fault finding activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The symptoms associated with the various pieces of equipment are explained with examples various problems that occur. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems with equipment are established following manufacturer's operation and safety specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Corrective action is taken in order to bring the equipment into operational standard.
