    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Plan a safe coastal passage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A safe coastal passage is planned between two coastal ports or to and from given points under different conditions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
  • A safe coastal passage may include but is not limited to the safe approach to such areas as but not limited to a harbour, bay or river mouth.
  • Different conditions for making a safe land fall under conditions such as but not limited to thick fog and clear weather.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information is obtained from navigational charts and publications for the planning of a safe coastal passage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
All potential aids to navigation are accurately identified by pointing them out.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
All potential navigational hazards are accurately identified by pointing them out.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The charts and publications for the task at hand are selected according to navigational requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The charts selected are the largest scale suitable for the area of navigation and charts and publications are corrected in accordance with the latest information available.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Conduct a safe coastal passage.
    OUTCOME RANGE
In the calculation of compass errors, bearings and courses, the answer is to be given to the nearest whole degree.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A safe coastal passage is carried out according to the plan developed and in accordance with International Collision regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The position of the ship is determined using the most appropriate methods to the prevailing circumstances and conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The position of the vessel is determined using Dead Reckoning taking into account wind, tides, current and estimated speed.
