PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the concepts and principles of flotation and displacement and describe the basic practical concepts and principles of buoyancy and reserve buoyancy. They will also be able to describe the concepts, principles of statical ability, assess the curve of this ability and describe the movement of the centre of gravity.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the concepts/principles of flotation and displacement.
  • Describing the basic/practical concepts/principles of buoyancy and reserve buoyancy.
  • Describing the concepts/principles of fundamental statical stability, assessment of initial stability and the curve of statical stability.
  • Describing the movement of the centre of gravity (G).

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • This unit standard introduces the practical awareness of flotation, buoyancy, stability and the centre of gravity with reference to a sea going vessel.
  • The vessel will be a sea going vessel.

    Describe the concepts/principles of flotation and displacement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The practical relationship between the mass of a ship and the volume of water displaced by the hull form is explained with maritime specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationship between the change in volume displaced by a ship and the change in mass of a ship is explained with maritime specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concepts displacement and deadweight are explained with examples in terms of light and load displacement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The displacement of a ship is calculated in accordance with standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The use of displacement/draught curve and deadweight curve/scale is explained and demonstrated in accordance with standards and procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the concepts and principles of buoyancy and reserve buoyancy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concepts and principles of buoyancy are described with reference to naval architectural terms and industry specific examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Buoyancy includes reserve buoyancy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationship between force of buoyancy and displacement is explained with maritime specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reserve buoyancy is explained in terms of its importance and the relationship between it and freeboard. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the concepts and principles of stability. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Stability may include but is not limited to fundamental statical stability, assessment of initial stability and the curve of statical stability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Definitions of statical stability are given in accordance with internationally recognised naval architecture terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Definitions may include but is not be limited to Centre of gravity, Centre of buoyancy, Metacentre, Metacentric height, Righting lever and Righting moment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concepts and principles of statical stability are interpreted with the aid of diagrams. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concepts of a stable or unstable ship and the position of positive, negative and zero on Metacentric Height (GM) are explained with the aid of diagrams. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A stable and unstable ship concepts may include but are not limited to a capsizing moment, the angle of loll and rolling about an angle of loll.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationship between the righting lever, righting moment for small and large angles of heel are explained with the aid of diagrams. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the movement of the centre of gravity (G). 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The different ways of movement of mass includes when mass is added (loaded), removed (discharged), moved within the ship and suspended (from a derrick hook).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The movement of gravity is described with examples of when a mass is moved within the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The movement of gravity is described with examples of when mass is added to or removed from the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The movement of gravity is described with examples of when a mass is suspended on the ship.
