  • Vessels may include any commercial vessel engaged in port operations activities, near coastal voyages and operating in limited and unlimited waters.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Organise the trawl deck work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The trawl deck work area is inspected to confirm that it meets safety requirements in terms of legislated, organisational and fishing sector specific requirements and norms.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The inspection will include but not be limited to checking the work area and taking the appropriate corrective action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The crew are prepared for getting the fishing gear into the water.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The preparation of the crew will include but not be limited to confirming the required crew are assembled, are appropriately dressed and know the tasks to be performed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The trawl deck work area is prepared for getting the fishing gear into the water according to ship board practices.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Preparations should include but not be limited to tools and equipment required for the task being available, appropriate equipment use and slinging techniques devised to move trawl net.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Adjust trawl components to optimise the catch.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Components may include but not limited to warps, otter boards, sweeps and bridles, netting material, hangings, flotation devices, ground gear, by-catch reduction devices, lifting gear, connecting devices (shackles, hammerlocks, chain, wires, ropes, Clevis pin connectors, G, C, D and sister clips), cod end closures (chain knot, zipper, hangman's knot, Dutch clip).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Checking the performance of the trawl assembly during fishing activities is demonstrated with reference to fishing sector norms and specific examples.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Checks may cover but not limited to species composition/mix of the catch; quantity of catch per unit effort; quantity of catch in comparison to other vessels; degree and character of polish on boards, sweep and ground gear; amount of debris in the trawl; the symmetry of warps, sweeps, bridles, head ropes, foot ropes, ground gear; wear of and damage to gear; stretching of wire and rope; quality of by-catch reduction devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Checking the various parts of the trawl assembly is demonstrated with reference to fishing sector norms and practices.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Checks may include but will not be limited to measurements of warps, sweeps and bridles for data on trawl performance and symmetry, observation of otter boards for data on trawl performance, observation of the operation of trawl components to evaluate trawl symmetry, comparison of observed operation of trawl components and gear plans to assess the effectiveness of deployment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Rectifying sub-optimal gear performance of trawl components is demonstrated with fishing sector specific examples.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Rectifying may include but not limited to adjustment, reconditioning or construction.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Retrieve trawls.
