PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for people who wish to develop and apply riding proficiency on a trained equine in order to develop confidence and ride in a competent manner according to accepted international standards.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to: understand the importance of and to be working towards an independent seat. They will also be capable of controlling an equine on the road and in the country side.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating and maintaining an independent seat at various paces on a trained Equine.
    > Range: Paces are limited to walk trot, and canter.
  • Explaining and demonstrating a jumping seat over an obstacle.
    > Range: Obstacles are limited to ones up to 60 cm in height and/or width.
  • Demonstrating the ability to ride individually, in a group and in the open.
  • Demonstrating the ability to apply road safety procedures while riding in rural and urban environments. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication, NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Equine handling, NQF Level 1.
  • Riding Proficiency, NQF Level 1.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Maintain an independent seat at various paces on a trained Equine. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Paces are limited to walk trot, and canter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Seat, legs and hands are applied as aids to change pace, effect turns and circles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A sitting trot is achieved, showing control and an independent seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A walk on a long rein is demonstrated showing control and an independent seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Directive terms are used on a trained equine in an enclosed area to show control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Halt and move off are demonstrated at walk and at a trot on a trained equine to show control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Commands at canter are executed on a trained equine showing control and an independent seat. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain and demonstrate a jumping seat over obstacles up to 60cm high and/or 60 cm wide.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The jumping seat is explained according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The jumping seat is demonstrated at a walk, trot and canter according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to ride over obstacles up to 60cm high or 60 cm wide is demonstrated showing control and an independent seat. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Ride safely as an individual and in a group in an open area at various paces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ability to ride over uneven terrain at various paces is demonstrated showing control and an independent seat. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terrain is limited to uneven ground and gradients of no more than 45 degree.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Techniques to be applied when faced with dangerous situations when riding are explained in accordance with generally accepted practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dangerous situations include but are not limited to mobile hazards, swarm of bees, dogs, inclement weather.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different safety requirements are identified for riding alone and in a group. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply road safety procedures while riding in rural and urban environments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The code of the road for equine riders is explained and demonstrated according to local by-laws and internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of road safety equipment is explained in terms of its purpose and the potential dangers of not using it correctly. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Road safety equipment includes but is not limited to reflective clothing and equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential safety hazards and dangers when riding on the road are identified for a given situation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of NQF Level 3 Qualification in the equestrian field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.

    Essential knowledge is reflected within the assessment criteria of each specific outcome:
  • How to maintain an independent seat whilst riding.
  • Different paces of movement.
  • How to orchestrate a jump.
