PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to use internationally accepted and humane restraining methods from the ground, on an equine, suitable for a particular need.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the use of equipment for restraining an equine and identifying associated potential dangers when restraining.
  • Understanding the situation and selecting the appropriate method of restraint:
    > Range: The methods of restraint are limited to tethering, leg hold, muzzle twitch, neck twitch, hobbles, equine crush, cross tying, knee haltering.
  • Demonstrating how to tether an Equine with a quick release knot according to internationally accepted procedure.
  • Demonstrating the twitching technique using a muzzle and neck twitch according to internationally accepted humane procedure.
  • Demonstrating lifting and holding an Equine's leg to immobilise the Equine.

    This Unit Standard will contribute to the development of a learner within the Equine field by providing recognition and further mobility within this field of study. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for creating opportunities within the equine industry. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Explain basic horse behaviour and body structure at NQF Level 1.
  • Use basic horse tack, blankets and boots at NQF Level 1.

    Understand the need for restraint and select the method of restraint.

    The need to restrain could be for the purpose of grooming, clipping, dipping, examination, treatment and shoeing 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of restraining the Equine is identified for specific situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Humane methods of restraint are identified that are appropriate for the equine's state of mind and the handler's safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Risks to both equine and handler in the restraining process are explained in terms of what could go wrong and how to minimise risks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Risks associated with restraining an equine in unsuitable locations are identified in terms of what could go wrong and how to minimise risks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods of restraining an equine are described for various situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Situations include but not limited to wild equines, inexperienced handlers and untrained Equines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Situations where the use of sedation by a veterinarian is required are identified in order to restrain the equine.

    Tether an Equine with a quick release knot.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Items used in tethering the equine with a quick release knot are identified and listed according to standard operating practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equine is tethered with a quick release knot according to internationally accepted humane procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not tethering the equine with a quick release knot are explained in terms of the impact on the equine in emergency situations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate restraining techniques for Equines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Twitches are used to restrain an Equine according to internationally accepted humane procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Twitches are limited to neck twitch and muzzle twitch.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different methods of limiting an Equine's range of movement when handling from the ground are implemented according to internationally accepted humane procedures for specific situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods of limiting an equine's range of movement is limited to leg hold, hobbles, equine crush pen and cross tying.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of inappropriate application of restraining techniques and devices are identified in terms of the impact on the equine and handler. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 3 qualification in the music field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
