PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Purpose:

This is one of two most important Unit Standards for this Qualification. It contains competencies that will assist the learner in performing their activities within a production environment. The learner will have an in-depth understanding of the production process and its constituent elements, assess process performance, demonstrate knowledge of the theory of products, materials, machines and plan to set-up a machine. The learner must also be aware of safety and health issues.

  • The automotive components environment include both the manufacturing and assembly departments or sections.
  • This Unit Standard is not restricted to the automotive environment. It can be used in any component assembly or manufacturing context.

    The different departments in a production environment are identified and described in terms of their functions and inter-relationships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The total production environment is discussed in terms of how external factors impact upon it and how to minimise the negative effect of these factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This could include describing how human resources can be deployed inter-changeably in different departments.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between materials process and the environment is described to illustrate the importance of limiting the impact of production on the broader environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aspects to consider are the minimisation of consumption of material and energy resources, design specifications to maximise energy efficiency.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of time and time management in the production environment is explained to prevent any delay in the process and any impact on downstream processes or customer deadlines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The broader company policies are explained to indicate the production processes the company is involved in. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The correlation between personal behaviour and the standard operating procedure of the company is discussed to emphasise the importance of teamwork and a positive attitude in the workplace.

    The production process is described in terms of the factors that influence it internally. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description includes but is not limited:
  • The primary goal and the factors that influence the production process, process framework, material consumption and model of the manufacturing process.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of statistical calculations is discussed to show how their interpretations assist in assessing process performance and performance capability.

    The role of the machine operator is described in terms of their importance in the performance of the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The Process Data Sheet (PDS) is discussed to show how it informs the performance of the production process to help improve the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of conducting an analysis of the process performance is explained, using relevant knowledge of the total production environment.

    The use of sub-standard material is described in terms of the potential impact on the final product.

    The various materials used in products made through a production process are identified and discussed in terms of properties, availability and costs.

  • This includes but is not limited to Ceramics, metals and alloys, polymers and composites.
  • Properties include but are not limited to Ductility, hardness, conductivity, toughness, strength, weight, weld ability and elasticity.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The construction and the design of the product are explained to indicate how raw materials and other components are combined together. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aspects to consider include but are not limited to construction specifications, electrical characteristics and attenuation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Materials are identified, selected and utilised using a checklist to prevent a high reject rate of the final product.

    The tolerances of different materials are discussed to gauge the variations from the ideal shape to that of produced parts.

    Products are identified using various methods for different contexts.

    The tools for the preparation and set-up of the machine are identified and described in terms of the specific requirements for a particular machine.

    The tooling requirements of the machine are discussed for particular product specifications and for machine set-up, operation and control.

    The machine indicators are discussed in terms of their importance in the production process.

    The components of the machine are discussed for different production and operation needs and in accordance with different specifications.

    The correct operation of a machine is maintained through monitoring and performing related activities.

    Related activities include but are not limited to quality control, quality improvement, machine efficiency, safety checks, production efficiency, production report.

    Procedures pertaining to power failures and fire are explained and applied to prevent injury to self and others.

    Safety, health and environment policies, procedures, aspects and standards are applied and monitored to ensure organisational compliance with relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    International quality standards are discussed and complied with as part of the quality management system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the activity being performed is used to prevent injury.

    Appropriate housekeeping practices are applied to ensure production efficiency and a cleaner environment.

    The impact of settings on production costs is discussed to ensure that machine runs within the mean limit of the specification.

    The planning process is explained to ensure that the machine is adjusted correctly and that the appropriate components are installed.

    The importance of determining and selecting the correct materials, tools, tooling and equipment is explained to ensure customer satisfaction with the product and prevent loss to the company.

    The importance of deadlines in the production process is discussed in relation to customer satisfaction and retention.

    Products to be produced are identified so that the machine is loaded correctly in preparation for production. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
