PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The preparation of surfaces is another very important aspect of the automotive components environment. Surfaces are prepared in both the assembly and manufacturing sectors, using various methods/techniques. In addition, learners need to know the purpose and principles related to surfaces and the types of surfaces they would be working with.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the purposes of preparing surfaces.
  • Prepare for work activity.
  • Conduct surface preparation procedures.
  • Perform work safely.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Surfaces refer to metal surfaces (ferrous and non-ferrous), plastic surfaces, any other surface in the assembly/manufacturing sectors of the automotive components environment.

    Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the purposes and processes involved in preparing surfaces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The processes related to surface preparation are described in terms of their differences and different uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In the case of metal surfaces these include etching, abrasion, and impregnation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of surface preparation are described in terms of their uses for a given situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In the case of metal surfaces these include washing, degreasing, derusting, and descaling.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods of preparing surfaces are described to show when and how they are used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In the case of metal surfaces these include hand cleaning, high pressure spraying, cold soaking, hot tank cleaning, blasting, and shaking/rumbling.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The personal protective equipment for each process and method is identified and used to prevent injury.

    Surface finish requirements for the job are checked in terms of job instructions.

    The availability and condition of materials required are checked and material is replenished to prevent delays during surface preparation.

    Tools and equipment required during operation are checked according to standard operating procedures.

    Problems with materials that cannot be immediately resolved, are communicated to the supervisor in accordance with organisational procedures so that action can be taken timeously.

    Pre-operational checks on equipment are conducted and unsafe equipment, worn out parts and defective equipment are reported to the supervisor in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Materials to be prepared are set out in the work area to avoid production delays.

    Visual checks for quality finishes are conducted to ensure customer requirements are met.

    The importance of minimising wastage during the operation is explained in terms of its financial implications.

    Hazardous conditions are identified and reported to relevant personnel so that the risks can be eliminated or minimised in accordance with organisational procedures.

    The implications of the misuse of preparation equipment are explained in terms of actions required to eliminate danger to self and fellow workers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The implications of not maintaining a safe working environment are explained in terms of possible loss of life or injury.
