PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners across a multitude of sectors, but was specifically developed for the Public Relations sector. Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to prepare employee communications in both print and electronic newsletters. Learners will be able to identify and write features and newsworthy items. Learners will also be able to prepare layouts for print or electronic distribution and then to implement the distribution plan.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Source and edit features and pictures for inclusion in an employee newsletter.
  • Arrange the layout and flow of articles.
  • Prepare employee newsletters for distribution. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    Sources of features are identified from within the organisation.

    Newsworthy items are identified for their value to the newsletter.

    Newsworthy may include but is not limited to industry and organisation specific news, staff news and current interest topics.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Features are edited or written to match the style of the newsletter in terms of grammar and audience comprehension. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Editing and writing include headlines, introductions, body, conclusions and captions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Pictures relevant to the features are collected from employees or sourced from stock libraries.

    Features are placed into a logical order to make the newsletter follow a theme according to their applicability to the organisation.

    Page envelopes are created to describe the contents and specific layout of each page in the newsletter.

    Features and pictures are placed in the newsletter using desktop publishing principles and software.

    Completed layouts are proof-read for errors and layout inconsistencies.

    Layouts are prepared for print or electronic distribution in accordance with organisational requirements.

    The distribution plan is implemented in accordance with distribution strategy and time frames.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
