PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners across a multitude of sectors, but more specifically within the Public Relations sector, who it the course of their duties have to assist in dealing with a crisis situation by handling the communication of the crisis, internally and externally, in a co-ordinated and systematic manner.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Define the impact of a crisis on the organisation.
  • Formulate a crisis communication management plan.
  • Implement a crisis communication management plan. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    A crisis may include but is not limited to financial, disaster, scandal, accident and corruption crises.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation of crisis communication is given in order to establish the role of public relations in a crisis situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of a crisis are outlined with reference to its impact on the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nature of a crisis is analysed to determine the appropriate future actions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stakeholders of the organisation are identified that will be affected by the crisis.

    Formulate a crisis communication management plan.

    Communication procedures are developed to contain the crisis.

    Communication responsibilities are assigned to individuals depending on the nature of the crisis.

    An outline is provided which addresses stakeholder interests during a crisis.

    Interests may include but are not limited to concerns, safety, media enquiries, well being and environmental.

    Implement a crisis communication management plan.

    Stakeholders are informed of the crisis according to the management plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Statements are written and released to inform the public of the crisis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A brief for handling queries is written and communicated to staff in accordance with the management plan.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through Recognition of Prior Learning) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
