PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to:
  • Utilise knowledge of hydrology to solve maintenance issues on wellpoint and borehole pump installations.
  • Sink single or multiple wellpoints and connect these to a pump.
  • Construct an access manhole and install a submersible pump in a borehole.
  • Assemble a borehole hoist using a chain block and tripod.
  • Prepare and install a progressive cavity pump in a borehole.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on a range of wellpoint and borehole pumps.
  • Strip, inspect and replace the serviceable components on a range of borehole and wellpoint pumps.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate a basic knowledge of hydrology that pertains to boreholes and wellpoints. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to static water level-water table, dynamic water level, cone of depression, drawdown, recovery rate, consequences of overtaxing the groundwater supply. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The static water level in a borehole or wellpoint is defined and the factors that influence this level are described in relation to the various inputs and extractions that effect the groundwater resource. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dynamic water level is defined and the effect that pumping various flow rates from a borehole or wellpoint are described in terms of the relative depths from the static level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The hydraulic cone of depression in a borehole is described in regard to the angular relationship between the static and dynamic heads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A borehole's drawdown is defined in terms of the particular volume of water that is extracted when pumping from the static to the dynamic level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The recovery rate is defined within the context of the time taken for a borehole or wellpoint to regain its static water level after pumping ceases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of overtaxing the groundwater resource are explained in terms of the negative impact this will have on the aquifer and on other groundwater users. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Show an awareness of the potential hazards that are prevalent in borehole and wellpoint installations and the safety precautions that must be applied. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to personal protective clothing and equipment, Electrical Wiring Codes, SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) hazard awareness, preventative maintenance checks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The personal protective clothing and equipment that should be worn when installing and maintaining boreholes and wellpoints are identified and the use of each of these is described with regard to the protection that these items afford. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The electrical safety procedures that must be followed whenever working on pumps and cabelling are described in accordance with the Electrical Wiring Codes and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The hazards present in the borehole and wellpoint installation environment are identified and the safety precautions that must be followed to minimise the occurrence of a safety incident are described in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment that is worn or in a poor condition that may pose a safety threat is identified and the required preventative maintenance checks are described in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Construct a wellpoint and install a pump with all the necessary piping and valves. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to ideal underground formation, porosity of the sand and aggregate, need for multiple points, methods of interconnecting multiple points, limiting factors on depth of a well, maximum practical static lift, self priming pumps, priming tanks, air tight joints, installation of pump, pipes and fittings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ideal formation that is required for construction of a wellpoint is described and the influence that the porosity of the sand and aggregate has on the yield from the wellpoint is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The occasion when multiple points are required is explained in terms of the disparity between the irrigation requirements versus the individual wellpoint yields and the methods of interconnecting these are described in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors that limit the depth to which a wellpoint can be sunk are explained in relation to the maximum practical static lift in that area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods of sinking a well and connecting the non return valve and the necessary interconnecting fittings are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons why isolation valves must not be fitted on the well or suction piping and why all joints must be air tight, are explained within the context of preventing air from entering the suction reticulation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The reasons why only a self priming pump, or a pump equipped with a priming tank should be used to extract the water from a well, is explained in terms of the need to retain a priming volume and to provide for air removal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The procedures for mounting the pump and installing the necessary interconnecting pipes and fittings are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Install a submersible centrifugal pump in a borehole utilising high density polyethylene piping and fittings. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to fill in the gap between casing and soil, benefits of a manhole, measure depth of the hole, flow inducer tube, cathodic erosion of steel fittings, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) piping, safety rope, join lead out cable, submersible cable, careful lowering of the pump and cable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for pouring a concrete slurry between the drilled excavation and the borehole casing before the borehole's slab is thrown, are explained in terms of preventing soil from entering the borehole. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits of constructing a flush mounted manhole at the top of the borehole are explained and the methods of installing this are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why the depth of the hole must be confirmed before the piping is measured and connected to the pump are explained with regard to positioning the pump at least two metres above the bottom. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The necessity of fitting a flow inducer tube to a submersible pump is explained with regard to ensuring an adequate flow of water past the motor and the methods of fitting the sleeve are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons why mild steel or cast iron fittings may not be fitted to the pump's outlet are explained in terms of the rapid metal erosion that results from the cathodic effect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The methods of installing the HDPE piping and safety rope to the pump and baseplate are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The techniques for joining the pump lead out cable to the submersible cable and securing this to the header piping are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The reasons why the piping and cable must not touch the edge of the casing when the pump is being lowered into the hole are explained in terms of preventing the scratching/damaging of these and the methods of achieving this are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Install a progressive cavity pump in a borehole using galvanised steel piping. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to setting up and positioning a tripod, tighten the pipes and shafts to the specified torques, positioning the second vice, attach the discharge head to the top column, secure the discharge head to the base, setting and locking the pulley on the drive shaft, align the faces of the pulleys, fit and tension V belts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The methods of setting up and positioning a tripod and chain block/block and tackle above the borehole are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of maintaining the correct torques when tightening the shafts and pipes is explained in respect of the possible problems that may occur if this is not followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why the second vice must always be in place when lowering new pipe sets into the hole are explained in terms of the protection that this provides should the top vice fail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods of attaching the discharge head onto the top column and securing the head to the concrete base are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The procedures for setting and locking the pulley onto the drive shaft are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The techniques of aligning the faces of the pump and motor's pulleys and fitting the V belts are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The importance of obtaining the correct tension on the v belts is explained and the correct techniques to measure the deflection and tension are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Service and maintain a range of borehole and wellpoint pumps. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to wellpoint pumps: frequency and tasks for preventative maintenance, procedures for stripping, inspecting and replacement of the serviceable components ,Submersible pumps: procedures to test and verify pump performance, procedures for the extraction, inspection and replacement of the serviceable components, Progressive cavity pumps: frequency and tasks for preventative maintenance, procedures for removal, stripping, inspecting and replacement of the serviceable components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of a wellpoint pump that require checking and renewal in a preventative maintenance inspection are listed and the frequency at which this maintenance should take place is described in keeping with the manufacturer's recommendations and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methods of stripping, inspecting and replacing the serviceable components of a wellpoint pump are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods of testing and verifying the pressure and flow from an existing submersible centrifugal pump are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedures for the disconnection, extraction from the borehole and replacement of the serviceable components of a submersible centrifugal pump are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The components on the discharge head of a progressive cavity pump that require regular inspection, lubrication and servicing in a preventative maintenance inspection are listed and the frequency at which this maintenance should take place is described in keeping with the manufacturer's recommendations and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The methods of adjusting/replacing the gland packing and V belts on a progressive cavity pump are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The procedures for removing a progressive cavity pump from the borehole and replacing its serviceable components are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and the company's standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Complete all necessary documentation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to importance of documentation, completion of servicing job card, impact of incorrect data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The necessity of noting all the materials used and the time involved in the maintenance of borehole pumps and equipment is explained with respect to allocating the costs for the service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The completion of the job card at the end of the service is demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of incomplete documentation are explained in terms of the impact this will have on the finances and stock replenishment for the business/company.
