PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is for learners to be able to use 3-dimensional construction processes and associated materials and tools to produce sculptural work. Achievement of the standard should involve developing competence in the preparation and joining of a variety of materials in developing sculptural work - these include fabrics, plastics, woods, and metals.

Visual artists equipped with this competence will be able to contribute to the development of a professional culture of sculptural practice within the visual arts, and produce artwork, which is underpinned by an applied knowledge of the procedures applicable to 3-dimensional construction processes.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Developing designs appropriate to 3-dimensional construction processes.
  • Preparing and maintaining materials and equipment for 3-dimensional construction processes.
  • Preparing supports/armatures for sculptural work employing 3-dimensional construction processes.
  • Producing a sequence of finished works employing 3-dimensional construction processes

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Develop designs for sculptural works using 3-dimensional construction processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Investigations and designs are presented that indicate material/s and tools to be employed for 3-dimensional construction work, and include technical experiments with chosen materials and tools that are relevant to designs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Investigations include drawings using a variety of mark-making techniques and media, 3-dimensional models and maquettes, formal studies, experimentation with different media and found imagery and objects; materials and tools include fabrics, plastics, woods, and metals and the cutting and joining tools, materials and equipment associated with each (e.g. power and hand tools for cutting, welding tools, nails and adhesives for joining).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Artistic intentions associated with image/design are explained with regard to the technical and formal constraints and possibilities presented by 3-dimensional construction processes, tools and materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Precedents for artwork using 3-dimensional construction processes and materials are identified and discussed in terms of their relevance for sculptural artwork. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical constraints and possibilities inherent in 3-dimensional construction processes, tools and materials are considered in terms of formal qualities of designs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Formal qualities include structural stability, scale, level of detail, malleability, mark-making and use of surface decoration and colour.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Issues related to structural stability and archival integrity are taken into account and planned for in investigations and designs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant cutting and joining materials, tools and equipment are organised effectively in workspace for ease of use, access, safety, cleaning and storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials for producing sculpture are prepared and maintained before and during working process in accordance with specifications related to selected materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Materials are prepared and maintained with due regard for archival integrity of artworks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Materials are prepared and maintained with due regard for health and safety of self and others. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare supports/armatures for sculptural work employing 3-dimensional construction processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Armatures and supports are constructed using appropriate materials and tools for the primary media being employed, and are selected with due regard for the archival integrity of work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Supports/armatures are constructed to be structurally stable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Supports/armatures are constructed taking into account the shape and structure relevant for the chosen primary materials and 3-dimensional construction processes to be employed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Supports/armatures are constructed taking into account the final form of the sculptural work. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Produce a sequence of finished works employing 3-dimensional construction processes. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Sequence of finished work involves producing at least five final artworks employing at least two different materials associated with 3-dimensional construction processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedures in working with 3-dimensional construction processes and materials are followed correctly in accordance with standard practice associated with particular materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The qualities and characteristics of 3-dimensional construction processes and materials are considered in finished works. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Qualities and characteristics include shape and form, structural stability, scale, level of detail, mark-making and use of surface decoration and colour.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Deviations from/developments of original designs apparent in finished work are explained in terms of the qualities and characteristics of the chosen material(s) and the creative and technical aspects of 3-dimensional construction processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Finished works are constructed to be structurally sound and stable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Where appropriate, materials and tools for surface decoration are applied correctly in accordance with artistic intentions and original design work.
