PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for learners in the private security industry, law enforcement or military that needs to cross obstacles in an urban environment while approaching a target in a high risk situation. This unit standard will contribute towards compliance with tactical, legal and safety requirements related to advanced tactical movement.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Analyse the types of obstacles found in an urban environment.
  • Apply scaling techniques to negotiate obstacles.
  • Demonstrate the application of ladders to negotiate obstacles.
  • Negotiate protection systems.

    Analyse the types of obstacles found in the urban environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The dimensions of an obstacle are estimated during a structured scenario. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Obstacles include but are not limited to walls, windows, roofs, tunnels, pipes, roads, canals, stairs and fences.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An obstacle is analysed in order to understand its influence on the teams continued movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The available resources are assessed in order to determine possible methods of crossing a specific obstacle. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources include human and equipment resources.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A method of crossing is selected taking the principles of obstacle crossing into account. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles include but are not limited to speed, momentum, team work, low profile and protection.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply scaling techniques to negotiate obstacles. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Obstacle height ranges from two to five meters.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is inspected to determine serviceability. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes but is not limited to gloves, slings, goggles, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The obstacle is approached tactically during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sling is applied to enhance the speed of team obstacle crossing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Organisational unique scaling techniques are applied within a team to tactically cross the range of obstacles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The chosen method of crossing is executed stealthily using personal and team during a structured scenario. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate the application of ladders to negotiate obstacles. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Ladders include ridged and flexible ladders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The height of the obstacle is assessed in order to determine the type of ladder required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tactical placement of the ladder is demonstrated during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The technique for ascending and descending on the range of ladders is demonstrated tactically during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The leg lock is demonstrated in order to free both hands while standing on the ladder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An obstacle is crossed tactically to ensure continued movement of the team towards the target. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Discuss the influence of protection systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Protection systems include but are not limited to electronic, passive and animal systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Electronic protection systems are described in terms of their functioning and how they can be avoided or neutralised to ensure the continued movement of the team towards the target. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Passive protection systems are described in terms of their functioning and how they can be avoided or neutralised to ensure the continued movement of the team towards the target. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The areas most commonly protected by animal systems are described and the possible methods of avoiding or neutralising them are discussed in order to maintain the security of the team's movement.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively. Tactical obstacle crossing requires personal preparation for the types of obstacles that may or may not be encountered along the approach route.

    Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information when learners are capable of collecting, analysing and critically evaluating information necessary to tactically cross an obstacle.

    Communicating effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion. Verbal communication within the team by means of hand signals or radios to ensure that efforts are combined to successfully cross an obstacle.
