PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for learners who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to understand and monitor the process of fabrication for crossworking diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to crosswork diamond gemstones and explain their use in different applications.
  • Describe the stages in the fabrication process for crossworking diamond gemstones.
  • Describe the critical checkpoints in fabrication for crossworking diamond gemstones and their importance for overall quality, weight and value of the finished article.

    Required tools and equipment used in the various stages of crossworking diamond gemstones are identified in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of the alignment of equipment for bruting and polishing is explained and the implications of incorrect settings are described in terms of impact on the quality and value of the gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of setting and clamping diamond gemstones in the various equipment for processing; is explained and the implications of inadequate setting are described in terms of impact on the quality and value of the gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Housekeeping, safety practices in the workplace and care of equipment are explained in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequence of deviating from workplace practices while utilising specified tools and equipment are described in terms of potential impact on productivity.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones to be crossworked are examined and instructions in the parcel are interpreted in terms of achieving optimal outcomes from crossworking. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Optimal outcomes must take into account the following:
  • Potential size and weight of the polished gemstone.
  • Proportion of the polished gemstone.
  • Elimination of blemishes.
  • Colour.
  • Clarity.
  • Risk to meet desired outcomes.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A plan for the crossworking of the gemstone is developed in terms of workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consultation over the planning and processing stages takes place in terms of specific workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The fabrication process is checked at appropriate times in terms of the plan, specific workplace procedures and the criticality of the gemstone in question. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Monitoring activities are recorded during the required stages of fabrication for crossworking according to specific workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The crossworked gemstones are returned for further processing according to workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Security and recording activities are concluded in accordance with workplace specific procedures.
